Day One - Happy Birthday Momma, how about a new bumper?

Thursday, May 8. What would have been our beloved Nana's 78th birthday, an auspicious beginning to our trip. We are certain she's watching over these proceedings, as yesterday her kitchen sign randomly fell off the wall. Here's our birthday tribute photo, complete with her favorite beverage...Coors in a wine glass.

We took off from Wenatchee at 9am, after making a few necessary modifications to the wheel wells of the Disco, aka "Blanco".
The big tires combined with the weight of our gear was making for some really annoying grinding noises as we cruised on down the highway...so Rich's Sawzall helped clear out the offending excess body material. Yeah, it's ghetto, but it worked.

Fairly uneventful drive along the Columbia River where, just below and above the I-90 bridge at Vantage the water level is dangerously low, due to a crack in the Wanapum Dam. Last we heard the engineers are still scratching their heads over what to do about it.

Stopped for lunch in Pendleton, OR at the Prodigal Son Brewery - a hipster joint in a small town known for plaid shirts, "prison blues", and whiskey. After lunch we "barrelled" (get it?) through the rolling green hills and past abandoned cement plants into Idaho.

Around 8pm we got ourselves situated at the Safari Inn (Dan + Amy) and the Mountain View RV Park (Rich + Lucia). Met some good friends at the 10 Barrel Brewery in downtown Portland for a nice dinner and a couple IPAs.

Alas...this day of smooth travelling found a way to throw us for a loop. It was raining pretty steadily in Boise, which created a way for Rich to discover he's got a nice healthy leak above the driver's seat in the motor home. Yikes. And the capper of the evening - as Dan pulled into the hotel parking lot a woman ran out in front of his truck. He swerved to miss her and ran right into a large cement pillar, badly denting his bumper. It ain't pretty. Luckily it didn't do any internal damage, but like your baby's first booboo, it's a sad moment of imperfection for our beloved Blanco. We are, however, very glad that no humans were harmed in the making of this film.

Stay tuned as we head further south to beautiful Salt Lake City. Oh...and if you happen to have a spare bumper lying around.....
